ROMP 2002 from Sunny California
In an extreme version
of the addage "Suckers Walk", the trio of amateur journeymen are beckoned to head
West to sunny California, to try and come back on the plane with just a little
bit more luggage. Holding tight to his well earned trophy is the defending champion
of ROMP 2001 who now has the distinct advantage of shedding his old nickname "West
Coast Maynard" in favor of his new nickname "The Sniper". Heard in an unofficial
interview, he said, "Winning on the road is difficult. I really had something
to prove. You guys are going to have to come and get it." Now Maynard is on his
home turf, and even more importantly playing on his home course. Check

Coming hard after him this year is the retooled "Hammerhead" Murphy, who feels
that he has found his swing finally (locked in the basement with a bunch of
other things that were never unpacked from the move from East Boston). The kid
had learned some hard lessons in ROMP 2001 and the season, especially how to
rely on other parts of the game when the driving was failing him. "My short
game really kept me out of the 100's last year, and got me below 90 a lot. I
don't think that I would be as good a pitcher or chipper if I was hitting every
green. Sometimes you have to take a few steps backwards before you learn. I
think I have a real shot at regaining the title this year." Murphy, who shot
an 81 at Spring Valley, and has also gotten a good look at the infamous home
course of Sunnyvale, feels that he has a distinct advantage in course experience.

Nelson
"Fireball" Pina will have a chance to fine tune his game and have a distinct
advantage if he plays at home, where the winds come sweeping cross the plain.
If he utilizes his home driving range, and pairs it up with some solid Oklahoma
practice rounds, he will be a consistent factor as in ROMPs past. The big question
mark here is that if Nelson gets a job which requires August training, he may
disappear as he had in 1998. Time will tell... Check

Pat "The Whammy" Rollo, once considered the handicap favorite (as his play
on New England would indicate), has gracefully bowed out of the tournament this
year, citing personal responsibility issues. He was unavailable for comment...
In 2001, Pat was leading after 4 rounds, but missed out on crucial late rounds
to forfeit his chances at the title. His effervescence will be missed...Check

Here's are this year's rules:
- $10 entrance fee for ROMP "Styx Too Much Time on My Hands" Trophy
- Be ready to cough up some $$ for junk
- The winner is determined by low net score for the week and wins the coveted
ROMP trophy (second place gets the lusty medal)
- Team winners determined by the points for team games, BBB, and Wolf. They
will get a hearty handshake and beers from the two non-winners (and of course,
there is still a Red Bull for Dave if he wins,
last year's has yet to be delivered)
- We will use the daily rolling handicap (handicaps are adjusted after the
day's events)
This year, there will be plenty of bragging and cross country taunting rights,
as well as the security of knowing that the trophy is in the hands of it rightful
owner (kind of like when Indiana Jones said, "That's the cup of a carpenter."
Oddly enough Dave has the same thing to say as Nelly did the year before,
"It's about friggin' time I won." Yes, couldn't have said it better myself.
